Teams in Indian Premier League
In IPL, a total 8 teams are qualified to play a tournament. Since its inception, there are total 13 teams from various cities which have played IPL. Kochi Tuskers Kerela played only one season before BCCI terminated their contract. Deccan Chargers (of Hyderabad) was in IPL from 2008 to 2012, which was later replaced by SunRisers Hyderabad. Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals were suspended by Supreme Court after the alleged betting activities among the owners in 2015 (Report as per BBC.com dated 14 July 2015). It was confirmed later by BCCI, that both CSK and RR will be making their returns in 2018 IPL season. Since 2016-2017, Gujarat Lions and Rising Pune Supergiant both teams were brought as a two-year replacement teams. Mumbai Indians is the most profitable team in IPL, with a valuation of worth $106 million, BCCI also bids the title sponsorship every year. Currently, BCCI transfer the title sponsorship rights in Vivo for a whopping 2,199 crore for next 5 years. The ticket sales in stadiums form a part of revenue for the home team. The denomination of ticket pricing is decided by the owners. The price of tickets depends on the capacity of stadium, city, and standard of living.
Next is stall rental, the food served to the various spectators is given on a contract basis and also the various other stores like official merchandise sales for their teams like t-shirt contribute to profit. The final part of revenue comes from IPL prize money, total prize money in IPL is around 51 crore, the prize money goes to the owners and half of their money must be distributed among the players according to BCCI.
